Any network that admits guests — a hotel, a hospital, a university, an airport — needs a layer that decides who gets in, at what speed, for how long and on what terms. That layer is the gateway.
In hospitality it usually ties into the PMS, so access follows the room number and the checkout date; in public venues it is also where access logging and record-retention requirements are satisfied.
What to weigh up
- Concurrent user count and gateway throughput.
- Authentication method: portal, voucher, SMS, PMS or directory integration.
- Bandwidth policy per user or per group.
- Reporting and log retention against local requirements.
